Examples of Coding Tables

BELOW are examples of coding tables from CNU dissertations.

They does not contain all data from each study.  It gives examples from the dissertation to illustrate the process.  Your analysis will require all data, but you will only make a brief table for inclusion in chapter 4 to show your analysis process.

  • The items in the left column are phrases from the raw data in the voice of the participants.
  • The researcher grouped them into open codes for items with similar meaning/intent.
  • Then the researcher grouped those open codes into broader categories (axial codes).
  • Finally, the researcher looked for themes and grouped the axial codes into selective codes.  These selective codes represent the themes voiced by the participants.
